Programme Note

This brief cycle of secular songs sets disparate poetry by Byron, Blake and DIckinson. In the first movement the choir is mostly homophonic, under which the organ provides a cushion of static harmony. The second movement, Echo's Song, depicts the famous story of the nymph Echo watching Narcissus' transformation. In the final song, Emily Dickinson's The Soul Unto Itself is presented as a fanfare: bold and brash.
